Tsukuba-KazNU Initiative
About
In February of 2012, the initiative between the University of Tsukuba and Kazakh National University was established. This center was organized with a mission to promote a research in the fields of Japanese language education, Central Asian Studies, and interdisciplinary research.
Furthermore, the center at Kazakh National University supports students
and teaching staff to become specialists of Japanese Language and Culture
and Area Studies in Central Asia. The center promotes joint research,
publication of scholarly articles as well as international conferences
and symposia in both countries of Japan and Kazakhstan.

Activities
■March 16, 2013, Almaty, Kazakhstan Workshop “International Workshop:
Japanese Engagement in Central Asia in International Perspective”
This workshop was co-organized by the Kazakh National University and the University of Tsukuba‚ Special Program for Central Asian Countries. Professor Lyailya Balakaeva‚ Dean of the Department of Korean Japanese Languages‚ and Professor Mara Gubaidullina‚ Faculty of International Relations‚ hosted the lecturers from the University of Tsukuba. Workshop took place on March 16‚ at the Faculty of Oriental Studies‚ Kazakh National University. Workshop was conducted in Russian and English languages. The speakers were as follows:
Timur Dadabaev (Associate Professor, UT) – “Japanese and Chinese Foreign Policies toward Central Asia: Can they be compared?”
Akifumi Shioya (Assistant Professor, UT) – “Central Asian Studies at the University of Tsukuba”
Kosuke Matsubara (Assistant Professor, UT) – “Japanese Cooperation on Earthquake Disaster Risk Management for Almaty: Toward an Interactive Cooperation”
Satoru Kimura (Junior Researcher, UT) – “University Based and Inter University Collaborative Studies on Central Asian History in Japan”
Finally‚ Hisao Komatsu‚ Professor at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies summarized the points mentioned during the presentations and talked about the changes in the attitudes of Japanese people toward Central Asian Countries. Even though the lectures were based on different disciplines (international relations‚ history and urban engineering) with each other‚ they could engage participants of the workshops in their speech. Participants were interested in the topics raised by lecturers and exchanged opinions on interdisciplinary subjects. As it has been mentioned‚ the workshop aimed to share the awareness of the problems both in Central Asia and Japan. Moreover‚ it has also been planned to conduct the workshops in the future‚ which will focus on the mutual relationships between Japan and Central Asian Countries.
■November 27 – December 10, 2012, Tsukuba, Japan: International Training Program on Professional Development of Educational and Organizational Skills among the University Faculty
Certificate Award Ceremony (1)An international training program entitled “Educational and Organizational Skills among the University Faculty”, organized and conducted in collaboration with the Republican Institute for Development of Leading and Research Pedagogical Staff of Education System of the Republic of Kazakhstan «The National Center for the Professional Development Orleu» during the period of November 27 to December 10, 2012. The training program hosted twenty-two researchers and university faculty members from diverse educational backgrounds. The Special Program for Central Asian Countries (SPCEA) at the Master’s Program in International Area Studies, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Tsukuba has been assigned as an institutional host for planning and managing the training program.

■February 29 – March 9, 2012, Tsukuba, Japan: International Training Program on Security and Sustainable Development in Central Eurasia
The training program for Kazakh National University professors and students was conducted in February 29 to March 9, 2012. Training Program hosted two professors, eight students from Kazakh National University and one student from Uzbekistan. The Special Program for Central Asian Countries (SPCEA) at the Master’s Program in International Area Studies, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Tsukuba has been assigned as an institutional host for planning and managing the training program.

■November 22 – December 2, 2010, Tsukuba, Japan: Training course for
Kazakh National University Professors
Training course for Kazakh National University Professors was conducted
in autumn, 2010 during the period November 22 to December 2. There were
five participants from Kazakh National University: Gulnar Balakayeva
(Director of the Department of Academic Affairs), Nurzhamal Aldarbek
(Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies), Galiya Ibrayeva (Dean of
the Faculty of Journalism), Aktolkyn Kulsariyeva (Dean of the Faculty
of Philosophy and Political Sciences), Bayan Yermekbayeva (Dean of the
School of Economy and Business).
